Solidarity and responsibility sharing in the EU asylum and migration system must prioritise safe routes to family reunion and international protection, not containment, pushbacks and returns
Ahead of the Justice and Home Affairs Council, 9-10 December 2021, SHARE and 22 organisations call in a joint statement for a renewed focus on EU responsibility sharing frameworks. Existing family reunion procedures and the expansion of voluntary relocation must be used more extensively to protect children and families on the move at the onset of winter, to improve migration management and ease tensions at various borders.
In a joint letter, ICMC Europe/the SHARE Network, and over 100 other organisations, urge the EU and its Member States to respond to the humanitarian crisis at the border with Belarus in a way that ensures people’s right to asylum and guarantees humanitarian access.
“My name is Khadeja and I arrived in North Devon on 15 November 2017 ”
Khadeja’s unique story as a sponsored refugee in the UK and as an ambassador and employee of the local lead sponsor, the Pickwell Foundation, is an incredible example of sense of community and willingness to help others.
Engaging rural communities in sponsorship programmes is often seen as challenging due to the general attitude towards change and diversity often attributed to them.
Yet, a different narrative is possible, and the work conducted by dedicated community members in the North Devon area of the UK proves it.

Ahead of the EU High Level Forum on the Protection of Afghans at Risk on 7 October 2021, and as humanitarian needs in Afghanistan continue to escalate, ICMC Europe and the SHARE network join 24 NGOs in calling on the EU to put protection at the centre of its response.
The call reiterates recommendations outlined in a joint statement released on 16 September that called on the EU and its Member States to live up to their commitments to refugee protection and humanitarian leadership, and share responsibilities with countries neighbouring Afghanistan. The upcoming Forum on providing protection for Afghans at risk, planned for Thursday 7 October, provides a key chance for them to do so.
